It's no secret that tennis is a difficult sport to re-create meaningfully and interestingly for the tabletop. The back-and-forth nature of the game and the sheer volume of strokes required to resolve a match make it difficult to stay engaged for the long haul. With that in mind, we introduced "Let's PLAAY Tennis" over the Holidays in 2022 as a print-and-play game to see what fans would think about a tennis game that approaches the sport with a new, modular framework. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and the game was featured in Sports Sim Magazine as the holiday's sports board game hit!
Now "Let's PLAAY Tennis" is back as an "official" boxed sports simulation game. It's everything you need to create your own preferred blend and pace of tennis action.
"Let's PLAAY Tennis" includes several components which will allow you to dial in to the level of detail you desire. If quick play is what you’re looking for, our Tournament Mode module will let you simulate the early and middle rounds of an entire tournament in about 20 minutes, reducing the field to a handful of finalists. You can then use the “For The Set” and “No Rally” modules to resolve the remaining tournament matches in 10 to 20 minutes more.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for detail, our “point-by-point” module will let you watch the action unfold as if you were court side, with serves, returns, difficult shots, winners, momentum and even unusual and rare results.
The “For the Set” module is the main tool in the box. It serves as a bridge between the two extremes of speed and detail. "For the Set" will instantly resolve the preliminary action of a set and take you to the potential set-deciding game--one player with the opportunity to win the sixth and deciding game of the set. From there, you can get to your final result with extended drama, point-by-point, or instantly via the “No Rally” results.
The feedback we've gotten suggests that you'll probably utilize all of the modules in this box, bouncing back and forth between speed and detail, quick-playing the stuff that's less interesting to you and slowing down as desired to resolve set-deciding action of key matches point-by-point. It’s an experience akin to watching a TV tennis match recorded on a DVR, where you can fast-forward to JUST the action you want to watch. In matches with less significance, interest, or competitiveness, you can skip the detail entirely and get right to the result.
Let's PLAAY Tennis is a perfect game for the solitaire sports board gamer, but it's also great for head-to-head play, singles or doubles! The game's unique momentum mechanic lets you build toward that ONE great, game-winning sequence or shot, or choose to exert your advantage little by little. It's up to you to decide whether/when to go for the "winner" shot, whether to expend energy to make a tough return or save your strength for a later.
And, you don't have to be a tennis expert to enjoy this game! We've designed it to be approachable and engaging to even a non-tennis fan. The rules are written with a minimum of specialized lingo. The player cards are laid out simply and elegantly--even a novice can instantly understand a player's overall ability level and unique strengths and weaknesses.
