The 2018-19 English Pro Season was an historic one on a couple accounts. First, it's runner-up club lost just once all season. Second, a newly-promoted club posted a remarkably strong finish.
Liverpool's 97 points was the highest-ever point total in modern pro league history for a team that did not with the title. Its sole loss—a 2-1 decision at Man City—proved costly. At one point in the season, the pro league table showed Liverpool with a seven-point lead over Man City, but a run of fourteen wins whittled back the advantage and on the final day of the season, Man City's 4-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion gave it the title by a single point.
Wolverhampton returned to the top-tier and produced its best showing in nearly 40 years. The club won 16 games, finished seventh in the table, and earned points from every team in the league except two: Liverpool and Huddersfield Town. An impressive showing!
Speaking of Hudddersfield, its twin victories against Wolverhampton represented two-thirds of its win total for the entire season. It joined Derby County and Ipswich Town as the only football clubs in league history to be relegated with a full half-dozen games still to play.(For those who enjoy a tabletop sports challenge, keeping Huddersfield out of relegation might be the ultimate!)
