The 2017-18 English pro league season will be remembered mostly for its runaway champion, Man City, which clinched the league title with more than a month remaining in the season. The club left the league record book in tatters with its 32 victories, 100 points, eighteen consecutive wins, 106 goals scored, and +79 goal differential, spending a scant 159 minutes the entire season as the trailing team! In all, an historic performance.
The 2016-17 champion, Chelsea, started the season poorly and quickly fell behind the front-runners. Its 21 wins would be excellent by most season standards, but this season it left them out of contention. Burnley was the league's surprise team, knocking off the defending champs in the season-opener and going on to post its best record in over 40 years, its first post-season action in nearly 50.
All three teams promoted to the top-tier in 2017-18—Newcastle, Brighton and Huddersfield—held on to their status at the end of the season. Of the three, Newcastle was the strongest, finishing in the top half of the standings. With Man City long-since having earned the championship, the biggest drama of the late season was in relegation. A season-finale match-up between Swansea and Southampton had the strange distinction of being crucially important, with the winner staying in the league and the loser relegated. Southampton's 1-0 win sent the Swans to the second-tier.
