There was much that was new and exciting as pro hockey headed toward the year 2000. For the first time in 20 years, there was pro hockey in Atlanta, with the birth of a new franchise that replaced the city's team re-located to Calgary in 1980. The championship cup was hoisted in New Jersey, with a memorable post-season for the sometimes-overlooked "other" New York area hockey team. The club changed coaches late in the season, and finished the season as the fourth conference seed. From there, it was classic playoff hockey lore. They swept Florida in the first round, dispensed with Toronto in the second. In the conference final, the Devils found themselves down three games to one to Philadelphia, but stormed back with three consecutive wins to win the series—the first time in league history that it had ever been done in a conference finals. That sent New Jersey to "Big D" to face the western conference champion (and defending league champion) for the title. Dallas had had a tussle of their own, needing seven games to get past Colorado. New Jersey opened at home with a 7-3 win, but the rest of the games were won by the visiting team. Dallas won a triple-OT thriller in NJ on June 8 (1-0), but the Devils posted a double OT win in Dallas to claim the cup in six games.
Aside from the full-throttle post-season action, the big news of '99 were new overtime rules put in place designed to amp up the excitement level of games which ended regulation in a tied score. For years, most teams had approached overtime with an eye toward minimizing injury and escaping with a point—which left the fans bored and sent the league scrambling for solutions. To reduce that incentive, the league decided to award a point for an overtime loss and open up scoring with four-on-four play during the extra period. The results were favorable: more action, fewer draws, reduced overtime minutes.
