1962 was a landmark year for big league baseball, highlighted by the return of a second New York City franchise to replace the one lost to the west coast a few years earlier. The expansion club finished with the worst record in baseball (by far!), but was well-loved by the locals and would win an unlikely world championship in less than a decade. Houston was also added to the league, bringing both big leagues’ totals to ten clubs.
The season was marked by great pitching—five no-hitters were thrown. LA’s fleet shortstop won the MVP title with a then-record 104 stolen bases. It was another banner year for the New York club of the junior circuit, which won the title by five games over Minnesota, while an epic pennant battle unfolded in the senior circuit between four powerhouse clubs: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, each of whom won more than 90 games. When the dust had settled, San Francisco and L.A. finished in a dead-heat with 101 wins, with a 3-game playoff series set to decide the league title. SF plated four runs in the 9th inning of game three to erase a 4-2 deficit and earned the right to face New York for the world championship. There, in a series that went the full seven games, the defending world champ Gotham club defended its title with a 1-0 win.
